How are you filling the ocean?
Dear Reader,
Let’s face it folks: Things are not getting easier.
Against a backdrop of national leadership that is inept, pugnacious, and cruel, Minerva and our clients are making the best of hard times. Many days I’m left wondering how: How do we keep getting up and showing up? How does anyone have the energy to try bold, new things? How is anything making a difference?
Which leads me to Catholics. Not the Pope (bravo!) but a nun. Mother Teresa spent her lifetime tending to folks who were sick, impoverished, and cast aside by society. She had a lot to be discouraged about, but her persistence was unwavering (even if her legacy is somewhat complicated). Mother Teresa wasn’t going to wait on leaders, global institutions, or her own male-dominated and slow-moving church. She just got to work—and did it every day.
One of my favorite quotes from Mother Teresa is about the collective impact of small actions: “We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.”
In this moment when dark times can seem overwhelming, I’m focused on the drops. And I’m pleased to share stories of Minerva clients and partners who do the same; cranking out those drops to fill the ocean, even if it takes a while.
Warmly,
Joy Portella
